A few of my favorite things

by Teri on March 30, 2010 · 49 comments

Since the weather has been warming up, I’ve been craving smoothies again for breakfast. (Anyone else moody and seasonal about their breakfasts?)  And my smoothie experience this morning rocked. It was made even better with a few of my current smoothie accessory faves. Allow me to show you.

1. Favorite Thing Number One: this smoothie combination.

  •
    • lots of spinach (I add enough spinach to fill up the blenderm then add the milk and blend those two together first)
    • hemp milk (enough to desired consistency…I think I use around 1/2 – 3/4  c.)
    • orange juice – just a splash or two
    • 5 frozen strawberries (which are giant since they are Costco variety…and not organic, so likely covered I-don’t-even-want-to-know and are probably morphing my reproductive organs as I type…has anyone found frozen organic strawberries at Costco? Sorry…I digress…next ingredient is….)
    • 2/3 c. frozen blueberries
    • 1-2 T ground flax (‘cuz it’s good for me)
    • 1 scoop Amazing Grass Amazing Meal Original

This smoothie perfect for sipping…or dumping in a bowl.DSC_0862-6 And topping with Ashley’s quinoa granola (Favorite Thing Number Two)DSC_0867-6 Let’s take a closer look…mmm…DSC_0868-7I love the quinoa granola; it’s a nice change from traditional granola (I love the chewy texture), and it’s equally yummy. I did tweak the recipe a little because I didn’t have everything, but it still turned out great. Definitely recommend giving it a try.

Now…what could make this delicious smoothie in a bowl with quinoa granola even better?

THIS! Favorite Thing Number Three.DSC_0864-9 No, it’s not a dentist tool, thingy-ma-bobber. It’s a spoon. It’s a straw! It’s a spraw! (Totally just made that up…but I think it works. :) )DSC_0865-9 Yes, I have a freckle on my knuckle. Can you see it? Now look deep into the straw…what do you see? Please tell me your deepest thoughts you discovered from looking into the straw…DSC_0866-6Get your own spraw at Crate & Barrel. [By the way, I went to Crate & Barrel for the first time a few weeks ago…oh, I was in love. I wish there was a C&B closer to me. My budget and my husband are grateful that there isn’t.]

Now it’s 9 PM and it’s time for LOST so I gotta end this thing now! :)

Tell me one of your favorite things today.

I just raided the mini spoons at c+b the other day…good thing they are cheap! Love your #1,2,3 things. The smoothie looks superb. I was just at costco w/the bro in law and sis in law because they have a card…[it was quite hilarious...the 4 of us shopping there on a sunday...anyway]…we left with like 6 things..lame! I did find a HUGE bag of organic cherries though and obviously their organic spinach is CHEAP. Glad you’re liking the quinoa-nola!! haha

I think that “spraw” is a copy cat of what the Brazilians use for their Mate drink. Travis has a bunch of them from his mission! Not gonna lie…I hate spinach but you almost made me want to try this smoothie! :)

yes! i’m so glad it’s a real word so I can justify using it more often.

I swear you can’t taste the spinach at all! I don’t love raw spinach either, so I usually only buy it for smoothies.

We have smoothies every morning. I told Geoff I was going to start putting spinach in mine and he thought I was crazy. Can you taste the spinach? You should try putting chia seeds in your smoothies instead of flax. It gives it a gel texture that is interesting.

Can’t taste the spinach at all!! I promise! I’ve even given spinach-enhanced smoothies to Rob and he didn’t know. :) I’ll try the chia seeds next time – thanks!

I can’t decide if that looks yummy or not. Ok, let me clarify, it looks yummy but all the flax and amazing meal (what does that taste like anyhow) make me wonder about what the whole thing would taste like. Maybe I’ll find out in just over a month ;>

And, I want a spraw!!

Reply

16 Teri March 31, 2010 at 9:48 am

Flax – you can’t even taste it!

The Amazing Meal on its own has kind of a grassy, earthy flavor. When I used to add it to smoothies with water, I had to gag it down. But when I add it with milk, I can’t taste it at all. Or maybe I’m just used to it now…

You need a spraw!

I just found your blog & I’m so excited!

Questions on the smoothie…. do you eat them every morning for breakfast or just on certain mornings like on days that you run or lift weights, etc?

also, is the amazing grass really worth it? its quite expensive!

Reply

20 Teri March 31, 2010 at 9:47 am

I don’t plan my smoothie consumption around anything special. Just eat them when I feel like it! But, when I know I’m going to be running a long distance (6+ miles), I always eat oatmeal beforehand. However, if I needed a quick energy boost before a workout and didn’t have enough time to “digest” something heavier, I think a small version of this smoothie would be great because it doesn’t sit in my stomach, ya know?

I love the Amazing Grass. I’ve only ever tried the Amazing Meal (none of their other varieties) and I really do feel like it gives me a lot of energy. Plus, I like having it around if hit the end of the day and realize I haven’t had any veggies – then I can whip up an Amazing Meal + milk + cocoa drink. :) I also notice that I don’t taste the “grassiness” of it if I mix it with some sort of milk instead of water.

I do have a favorite spoon ; ) But my favorite thing today are the comments that my son makes first thing in the morning. Today he was brushing his teeth and was like “Mommy, do you see my hair? It is out of control. I need a cut.” He was so matter of fact. He cracks me up!

And I totally thought it was a dentist tool and caught myself laughing when what you wrote was exactly my thoughts.

I don’t have any real new favorites right now, which is a shocker because I am always like “I LOVE this! You have to try it!” I did just find some Sponge Bob individually wrapped packets of edamame in my local grocery’s organic freezer section (boy that’s a mouth full!) so it’s been the highlight of my lunches this week.

HA!! I had to laugh at your C&B comment. We are going back to Colorado this summer and the first thing I did was check to see if Crate&Barrel was anywhere near Denver. I was dancing like a fool when I found one. And a Sur la Table is near there, as well. I cannot WAIT to see the inside of both.

ooooh, I love Sur La Table. I might like C&B better. Well, from what I could tell the 10 minutes I was in there anyway!

And I have to second the Amazing Grass. I recently found this stuff and have been doing different reviews. I love the Amazing Meal. It gives me energy, guarantees I get in more fruit and veggies, and it tastes good! I’ve tried others and nothijng compares to Amazing Grass.

For anybody who is on the fence, they sell small packets so you can try them.

That smoothie sounds amazing too. I haven’t jumped back into smoothieville yet (mornings are still cooooold) but I can feel the cravings starting to come on… especially after seeing smoothie pics like that! I’ve never tried Amazing Grass either but I think I need to hook myself up. Smoothie time here I come!

Today favs: the SUNSHINE. and the fact that I found out I don’t have to get the one single wisdom tooth in my mouth yanked out. Happy news haha :)

No, I’ve never tried quinoa pasta. Does it taste different? High protein content?

me again… so, i tried making the smoothie and it was a little bit disatrous but i’m hoping its b/c i left out a few things.

i used : 2 cups spinach, 1 cup almond milk, 1 cup frozen strawberries and a scoop of amazing grass. i did not have any orange juice to splash in and i forgot the blueberries…

do you put any ice in the blender with the ingredients?

so my question is does the juice add a little more sweetness? i could definately taste the amazing grass and by the time i got about 3/4 done it seemed the amazing grass was all at the bottom & it took everything out of me not to gag!! :(

Reply

45 Teri April 1, 2010 at 1:05 pm

hmmm…I’m not sure the strawberries alone were enough to cover up the earthy flavor of the amazing meal (i’ve never tried amazing grass). I think a banana or orange juice would help; you need something strong! I’ve always been able to taste the amazing meal until I started adding orange juice.

I don’t put ice in it when I’m using frozen fruit, unless I accidentally add too much liquid and need more to thicken it up. I usually start with a little liquid and then add more if I need it.

Eew, that’s gross if it all clumped up at the bottom. I’ve never had that happen. Was yours really liquidy?

Reply

46 Toni April 1, 2010 at 3:56 pm

Yes It was really liquidy and I’m guessing its because the only frozen ingredient was strawberries! I’m planning on freezing some bananas tonight. I also got juice at the store this evening….. so we will try again in the morning! Also I am using the “amazing meal”…I just keep calling it amazing grass for some reason! Thanks for the help! I’m so glad I’ve found your blog :)

Reply

47 Teri April 1, 2010 at 4:02 pm

I hope it goes better for you! Let me know! Maybe try less milk to start and add as needed too…i’ve never really measured so I’m not really sure how much I use.

I call it Amazing Grass all the time and have to correct myself because I know that some people actually use amazing grass, not the meal. :)

welcome from Germany!

low – budget: I would go for peanut butter, bananas, spinach and milk. They are cheap ingredients, but healthy and filling. Plus you’ll get some greens and protein from the nut butter and milk.
