My Top 7 Running Gear Essentials

by Teri on November 2, 2010 · 32 comments

On Sunday, I ran 9 miles in my Vibrams and I realized I haven’t been writing on this blog when I’ve been training for a longer race. I had my personal family blog that preceded A Foodie Stays Fit, which was FILLED (perhaps too much so?) with stories of running and my favorite running gadgets. So, when I finished my run, I grabbed my iPhone and shot shoddy pictures of my favorite gear when it was still fired up from action. Smile

My #1 Favorite Running Gear: Currently, my Vibram FiveFingers (~$85). Obviously.

IMG_0202

Can you see that my feet are all veiny and a little poofy? Yeah, I guess 9 miles semi-barefoot will do that to ya. Answers to your Qs on VFFs coming later in the week so keep those questions coming!

Other favorites (in no particular order):

#2. Amphipod Micropack Satellite clip-on pouch ($16)

IMG_0199

It’s big enough to hold my iPhone, my key clicker, and a couple of GUs.  The website says it’s supposed to ride on the outside of your waistband, but I’ve found that it flops around that way. So, I wear it with the big pocket (the longer side) on the inside of my waistband (similar to the Micropack Explorer) and it’s great. No bouncing around.

#3. Ultimate Direction FastDraw Plus ($18)

12_photo1_med_1161710494

I’ve had mine for almost 5 years and it’s taken me through multiple half marathon trainings, and I used it all on my long runs last year while training for a marathon. It’s still holding up nicely, I’d say.

IMG_0216

The handstrap tightens so I don’t even have to “hold” onto it. It just stays on, which, honestly, is really an improvement over gripping a traditional water bottle.

IMG_0218

And the pocket is big enough to hold a full set of keys, a bunch of GUs (vanilla and mint chocolate are my favorites), Shot Bloks (Black Cherry), or a baggie of dates. I’ve put 3 GUs in there and probably could have fit another.

IMG_0217

#4. iPod nano and InCase Sports Armband Pro ($30)

IMG_0201

I know my iPod could fit in my Micropack of water bottle pocket, but I think it’s obnoxious in those places so I strap up on my arm.

#5. Garmin Forerunner 305 ($200)

IMG_0200

I’ve had this for a couple years and still think it’s one of the best purchases I’ve made. The best part is that it tracks my distance, so I can run whatever route I want and always know how far I’ve gone. It also tracks my current pace, average pace, lap pace, best pace, paused time, calories, heart rate, and probably a million other things.

From my limited experience with the newer 405, I actually like the 305 better because I think the screen is easier to see and customize. Plus, the 305 is cheaper now!

Yes, it’s kind of big and takes getting used to but it doesn’t bother me. Seriously, it’s awesome to not have to map out specific routes trying to plan long runs!

#6. Sony Active Style earbuds + detachable over-the-ear hooks, also pictured below under #7 ($40)

MDRAS40EX

I sweat a lot when I work out. We’ve established that. Consequently, I have a really hard time finding headphones that give decent sound without falling out. I also tend to destroy headphones because they short out from all the sweat. So far, these are doing well. They give decent sound since they are in-ear (and come with three bud sizes) and the detachable hooks prevent them from falling out and off.

#7. Reflective Vest ($30)

448_lg_0

If you do any outdoor running at dawn or dusk or ever run in the complete dark (and you had better not be running alone), this is a MUST HAVE. No exceptions.

Drivers CANNOT see you, even if you wear white, even if you can see them, even if you think the street lights are bright enough, even when it’s still kind of light out. I think dawn and dusk are more dangerous than complete darkness because it’s a very difficult time to see with the weird lighting and drivers aren’t on high alert. Get one. It’s only $30.

There is a guy that runs on the road by my house that I nearly hit once because I couldn’t see him until my car was about 10 feet away from him. I see him every time I go to the gym in the AM and even though I know he’s there somewhere, it still makes me nervous because I can’t see him until I’m very close. I’m tempted to stop and give him my own vest. Reflective vests help drivers see you from MUCH further down the road.

I’ve run in multiple brands and styles and the Amphipod Xinglet Pocket vest is, hands down, my absolute favorite.

IMG_0206

It’s adjustable in four places so you can get a great fit instead of those panels that flop all over. I’ve worn it in the summer over a tank top and in the winter over three layers. I don’t even notice it when I’m running. And I especially love the large pocket on the front to hold keys, GUs, credit card, etc. [Can you tell that I never have a storage shortage while running?]

Now, of course, you don’t need any of this (except the reflective vest). Usually my favorite and best runs are unplugged and equipment free. But when I am gearing up for battle (as Rob teases me when I’m strapped into all this), these are things that make long run logistics a little easier.

What’s your must-have gear for running, long or short distances?

[Keep those entries coming for Alo capris! And yes, if you were already following me or Alo on Twitter/Facebook, that still counts as an entry. Just leave a comment telling me so!]

Thanks for sharing your running essentials!

How do the Vibrams work in colder weather. Its in the 30′s here. Do your feet get cold?

Vibrams make a model for cold weather running. The tops are made of neoprene. They called the FiveFinger Flows.

Thanks for your recommendations! I might have to add the reflective vest to my Christmas list. Some of my “must haves” for longer runs are my Saucony shoes, an arm band for my cell phone, and Carb BOOM! energy gels (preferrably apple cinnamon).

Hi, thanks for the recommendations! I have a Vibrams question: Do you wear them all winter? If so, how do you keep your feet warm, especially on long runs?

Water bottle (yours is WAY better than mine) and either Strawberry Banana Power Bar Gel OR Chocolate GU. I’m trying the transition from the Power Bar gel to Gu and can’t tell which one I like more. Is there a reason you GU instead of gel? Also, I run with Body Glove headphones plugged into my phone (which I use for an mp3 on long runs in case of emergency) they have a little button I can click to answer or make a phone call and they are also the hook kind. Love your blog! You are one informed chick!

I just like the flavor of GUs better! :)

I love my SpiBelt! Fits my phone, keys, and health info (God forbid anything happen). Also, I wear a hair tie on my wrist and use a key chain to hold onto my pepper spray. It’s the only way I feel safe running in the early dark mornings. Check out my site http://eatontherun.wordpress.com/up-to-speed/ I have all the things that fuel me for running, including books, my fav races, and other equipment I love. Great post :) Can’t wait to hear about the vibrams, I’m still unsure.

That’s a lotta gear! I love my Vibrams too and can’t wait to read your answers. One problem I’m having is increasing my mileage without my Achilles killing me or my mile time going to sh*t. Perhaps you can shed some light on these issues. :)

Do your Vibrams provide good arch support? I’ve recently discovered that my right foot has become very flat-footed over time and I’m definitely confident that this has resulted in a lot of shin/lower leg pain when running or even standing for long periods of time (god, I sound like an old lady). I need to visit an orthopedist to get proper orthotics, but was just wondering whether Vibrams are a good fit for flat-footed people, like myself :)

I have my ipod shuffle and my polar heart rate monitor watch. I really want to get a Garmin but I’m a new runner and want to make sure I’m really committed first before I commit all that money.

I also can’t recommend a RoadID enough! I don’t have as many storage options and sometimes I don’t strap on all my gear so the RoadID I wear on my shoe definitely eases my mind and my parents. Safety is something TOO many runners overlook!

Great post!

I need a reflective vest!!! Thanks for the source!
I agree with you on the Garmin 305, I love it! I got really sick on my last half marathon after consuming GU. Besides shot blocks, anything else I can take during my long runs?

Thanks girl!

You are the batman of running! All you need is shark repellent :P
Personally, I could not live without my FuelBelt for hydration and gels on my long runs or my Garmin 405. Besides clothing and shoes though, that`s all I`ve really need!

I like your essentials! I suppose I am a minimalist whenI run cause all I need are my shoes and a headband. I would get a heart rate monitor, but it would make me obsessive. You can be my running buddy in sf, that is, if i cant keep up!

I carry pepper spray since I run on dark roads and solitary trails.
I need the fast draw hydration. I love my camelbak, but I don’t need it for short runs.
I’ve got the incase holder for my nano. It has held up for 3 years and not one drop of rain or sweat has graced my nano. Love love love this one.
Garmin–got it! Love it! started taking pics of my results a few years ago and thought I was a silly freako for doing it, but I still do it. I love having a record of my fails and accomplisments.
Other than my stuff for diabetes testing, I agree with the list. :-)

Hey, Teri! Love your essentials, although I don’t think I could ever wear Vibrams…! Do you ever use any apps to help you train? For my own race training, I like the Personal Running Trainer app (use it on my iPhone when I run). Everything is scheduled and summarized plus I get to choose my own background music from my iTunes library- a major plus for me!! The instructions are voiced over the music so it’s super easy. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/personal-running-trainer/id368033565?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D4

9 miles in Vibrams- that’s awesome! I’d love to try them out, I’ve heard so much about them and even know a few people who have them by now.
That’s a lot of gear, and I was happy to see that you did put a disclaimer about now needing all that stuff. I can’t afford most of that, and am perfectly content just to carry my cell phone (for safety purposes), and sometimes water with me on a run.

Really interested in that vest a) for the safety and b) for the storage. I run in the early morning when it’s still dark out sometimes and it would be soo helpful. Thanks for sharing. Just found your blog and love it!
