Do I Have an Accent? (A Video Post!)

by Teri on February 9, 2011 · 63 comments

I love the accent video blog (I hate the word "vlog") that is going around right now. So, here’s my version.

If you want to follow along, these are the words I say: Aunt, Route, Wash, Oil, Theater, Iron, Salmon, Caramel, Fire, Water, Sure, Data, Ruin, Crayon, Toilet, New Orleans, Pecan, Both, Again, Probably, Spitting image, Alabama, Lawyer, Coupon, Mayonnaise, Syrup, Pajamas, Caught

  • What is it called when you throw toilet paper on a house?
  • What is the bug that when you touch it, it curls into a ball?
  • What is the bubbly carbonated drink called?
  • What do you call gym shoes?
  • What do you say to address a group of people?
  • What do you call the kind of spider that has an oval-shaped body and extremely long legs?
  • What do you call the wheeled contraption in which you carry groceries at the supermarket?
  • What do you call it when rain falls while the sun is shining?
  • What is the thing you change the TV channel with?

Ah, you’re so cute :) And it’s so good to hear your voice again (and yes, you have a tiny little accent!). Love that you were too chicken to TP houses too! We totally would have been friends in high school :)

Terri,
I guess growing up in Greensboro, and now living in Raleigh has turned me into a true southerner. I say tons of those words differently. Don’t worry, you’re still a west coast gal.

West. Your /a/ in “and” and /ou/ in “sound” are slightly nasal just like a Utah accent. I don’t know as much about the word choices, but my SLP training can back me up on the vowel analysis :) . Fun to hear your voice again!

9 Teri February 10, 2011 at 7:41 pm

yay! I was hoping you would give your analysis as a professional. :) And I’m glad I still have my Utah roots. :)

omg this made me laugh so hard! i would never video myself talking because i’d be very scared to hear what i actually sound like to other people. i live in fear that i will regain my NY accent when i move back. Oh, and people down here call the remote control a ‘clicker’. i hate it. hate.hate.hate

hehehe. I want to hear you with a NY accent because you totally don’t have one!

A ‘clicker’??? WHAT?! That is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard!

You get a bit of nasality when you say a few words, such as “sound” and “and” and “accent”, reminiscent of Chicago (we like to say Chi-caaaaaaa-go). Other than that, you have a little speck of southern in your voice.

Nasality means you have ‘nasal resonance in non-nasal speech sounds’ (m, n, and ng are nasal speech sounds and can only be produced via nasal cavity) so your “ou” and long “a”s are coming from your nasal cavity rather than from your throat. This can be pretty common actually.

Sorry, I’m an acting major and know a good amount of speech and the process of speaking, etc.

Long time reader, first time commenter!

First of all, you’re adorable. And second of all, you really don’t have an accent at all, especially for a Southerner! I’m from Connecticut but went to college just outside Myrtle Beach, SC, and the only thing you say remotely like someone from the south is syrup (sirrup vs. see rup). And some people call the remote control a “clicker,” which is just plain stupid. :)

Anyway, cute video! And, oh yeah, I love your blog.

Not a southern accent, but I detect a little Utah that might be wearing off . . . maybe friends and family are sad about the deteriorating Utah accent??? Don’t know. I thought I’d answer your questions and I’m totally curious about the answers. I’ve lived all over the country and have picked things up from everywhere.

What is it called when you throw toilet paper on a house? Papering or toilet papering
What is the bug that when you touch it, it curls into a ball? rolly poly (is that the bug you mean?)
What is the bubbly carbonated drink called? soda, although my mom and friends from out west use “pop” and my southern friends say “coke” for everything
What do you call gym shoes? tennis shoes
What do you say to address a group of people? ya’ll (one of the few places my FL roots show up AND I say “Fla rida”
What do you call the kind of spider that has an oval-shaped body and extremely long legs? daddy long legs
What do you call the wheeled contraption in which you carry groceries at the supermarket? grocery cart
What do you call it when rain falls while the sun is shining? don’t have a word for this one, but I love it.
What is the thing you change the TV channel with? remote, although I’m partial to the way my three year old nephew says “gamote”

Loved hearing your voice Teri!

This was adorable. It makes me want to go and do it. I grew up in FL (which some people will argue that certain parts are Southern-esque), moved to Boston, and now live in Chicago. My dad seems to think my accent changes in every city I am in. I don’t hear it. :) I would say you have a teeny tiny slight southern accent.

I’m a California girl that has lived in the south for many years and all of my family hears a southern accent… But not so much from true southerners. I still have a couple of where are you from? I definatley sound more southern at work! Oh and it’s pill bug and TPing!! I never heard anything about sunshine during the rain until today.., my 6 year old son said today… If it rains and there isn’t a cloud in the sky. That’s because the space shuttle landed in the ocean??! Go figure. I did not ask him anything about that he was just informing me! Oh I love your blog read it all the time

I didn’t notice any southern accent when you said the individual words, but it definitely came out when you were just talking. It’s like you slip into it when you start having a conversation.
