Healthy Hair Tips…in Video Form…in Makeup-less Form

by Teri on February 15, 2011 · 52 comments

I get a lot of questions about how I keep my hair healthy with all the hair coloring that I do. And since you guys quite liked my last video post, I decided to film this topic too. Besides, it’s much easier to talk about it instead of typing it all out. And sometimes, laziness wins. And sometimes, that’s ok.

And yes, I realize the freeze-frame of the video before you start it is incredibly awesome and sexy. What can I say? I’m meant to be on camera. (Um, not.)

Note 1: I filmed this last Saturday so, no, that is not my latest and greatest hair color.

Note 2: Yeah, it’s kind of long. Blame Maizey.

What is your #1 keep-your-hair-healthy-shiny-and-smooth tip? You have to watch the video to learn mine!

I used to have awful frizzy, dry hair. Now, I let my natural color grow out, I use a length & strength shampoo and a full & thick conditioner. When I dry it, I use the medium heat setting, then when it’s dry blast the cold air. I then “iron out the kinks”. My hair has never looked or felt healthier. It’s fine so it’ll never be super thick but if I can keep it healthy, I’m happy! :-)

Maizey needs a blog, she is so funny. If I didn’t know you and see you often enough to say you have beautiful hair, I would think you were off your rocker with that shampoo schedule. I may get brave (not enough to Roll a yard with TP) and try this!

You are still gorgeous with or without makeup! I don’t wash my hair every day- I use some great dry shampoos, the Treseme doesn’t work as well for me. I do have it, though! It makes my hair kind of… tough?! Not like hairspray, but it doesn’t keep it as soft as more expensive brands.

My #1 tip for keeping my hair healthy is don’t wash it everyday…ever since I stopped washing it everyday, my hair has been so much more healthy. Another secret is not putting your hair in tight ponytails (causes breakage).

Great video!

I always wished I could not wash everyday but didn’t think it was possible for me. I workout 6 mornings a week and when I get home I look like i just stepped out of a pool. So you rinse you hair w/ just water and then condition and style as usual? I always thought it was the blowdrying that was bad, not the shampoo. I’m going to try this this weekend – too scred to try it on a work day….

yep, after working out (and I am a MAJOR sweater…my hair is drenched afterwards), I just rinse with water, condition the ends, rinse again and style as usual. Blowdrying – especially on high heat – is damaging, but shampooing is very drying to the hair too.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting this video! I am a iwashmyhaireverydayomg person and have been looking for info on how to keep your hair healthy if you sweat a lot ( we have the in common! I love sweating when I work out! All those endorphins are FABULOUS!) I work out 5-6 times a week and have been washing my hair after every workout. I have noticed this has taken a tole on my hair and your tips are great! My hairdresser actually told me to try and find a dry shampoo, and the Tresemme looks like a great buy!

I will be using your tips! Thanks so much!
My number one hair tip that I use currently is letting my hair dry naturally as often as I can. I have fine curly hair so this just amps us my volume :)

Teri, those are some great tips. I don’t wash my hair daily. Usually every other day or sometimes every third day. I tend to use baby powder, but I think it’s high time I got some dry shampoo! I also don’t rinse my hair with water on the non shampoo days bc I figure blow drying on those days doesn’t help my hair either. Maybe I’ll switch to washing every third day with a rinse on #2.

My other tip is: I prefer switching between shampoos so my hair doesn’t get “used to” one shampoo. I’m not sure if it really works, but I like the theory. :)

Wow, those are some great tips. I like that you have issued a challenge for us everyday hair washers. It is going to be really hard for me. I have really oily hair and a smelly scalp (eww gross, I know), and that makes me feel the need to wash everyday. I am going to buy some dry shampoo and give it a whirl! ;)

I’ve been shampooing 2x/wk (and rinsing the rest) for almost two years now. I have A LOT of super thin hair too and, no joke, workout days on rinse days give me the some of my best hair of the week! Honestly, I weened myself off of the daily shampoo. First, I skipped one day a week, then once every two days, then every other day, etc. until I arrived at my current sched (Mondays and Thursdays). It was a lot easier on my hair and my fear of greasiness. The best was last August when I went backpacking and went more than a week without a shampoo – didn’t even start to look or feel greasy until the last day. Then the hot shower and suds felt soooooo good. Great post.

I don’t wash my hair everyday, either. I remember my mom telling me that when I was a little girl, so it’s been my habit for a long time. I have really dry hair/scalp/skin – so luckily I don’t have to deal with greasy looking hair (which means, ew, I have dandruff) – but I loved all your tips!

Such a great post! Loved the video and can’t wait to use the tips, I’ve been thinking about it because I got my hair done recently. My hair is very similar to yours so I think this will really help me! The shampooing twice a week may be a little hard, maybe 3 times to start… or 4! I know it’s bad, I’m one of those shampoo everyday or almost everyday girls! oops.

I’ve been waiting to watch this!! You are soooooooooooooooo adorable…LOVE your tips!! I shampoo about every other day…definitely used to be an everyday-er. I could probably stretch it a little more, but it’s so long right now that it’s a bit harder to hide the nastiness after a day or two. Great vid girl!!!

I’m definitely a wash-every-other-day girl because my hair dries out so easily and frizzes up, but I haven’t ever tried more than that. I might have to give it a whirl! I definitely noticed an improvement when I stopped shampooing every day. But I’m so guilty of flat ironing at least 4-5 times a week. I just think the ringlet curls don’t look polished enough for work :/

I’m definitely trying to get in the habit of not washing my hair everyday. It’s a hard transition! I acutally like the “psst” better but I’m about to go to Ulta and splurge on the Oscar Blandi dry shampoo. It’s a powder instead of a spray which I think I might like better!

Teri, great post. I have about the same schedule, how funny! (Monday morning and Thursday evening for shampoos). I let my hair air dry and then use a ceramic iron for 10-15 seconds per section to put some loose curls in (my hair has gotten straighter over time). I really appreciate the shampoo recommendation, too. kathy

I used to get so many “OMG” stares when I told people that I only washed my hair 2-3 times a week. I recently gave it six months free from all heat by wearing it curly and my stylist said she felt a big difference. Now I am mostly straightening it – although minimal ironing, etc. I find that the lighter product I use the better – less oil to deal with. Aveda works great for me and even though I am on a strict budget, I will splurge for good product. I always rinse my hair in cold water and when it’s in need of a wash but I want to hold out, I just wet, comb through and have nice waves.

Once summer hits, it will be straight no questions asked. As much as we all hate doing it, working with what you’ve got is key. As always, love your look! Red never worked for me – faded too fast. You look great!

I love these tips! I typically wash my hair every day (I have very, very fine hair and not a whole lot of it – the worst combo!). I also have oily skin and oily hair. I’ve tried shampooing only every other day for a few months straight and unfortunately did not see any change in oil production (just like my skin…I moisturize every day but it doesn’t really effect shine – not noticeably, anyway). I have dark brown hair and have found that dry shampoo can really help – I actually rub it into my roots the night before I want to skip washing my hair – I do it right before I go to bed so that the white powder can soak in while I’m sleeping. Otherwise you can see the white residue on my hair. Then I avoid getting it wet in the shower in the morning.

Teri, awesome tip on washing the hair without using any shampoo!! I am so used to washing my hair every day that I cannot stand the grease when I don’t wash it at all – washing it but taking a break from shampooing (and just use an organic hair mask on the ends) is just the right solution to wean myself off the daily wash!! :-) Thanks so much!!

Hi Teri!

I’ve got a question. After watching your video, I started shampooing my hair with a sulfate-free shampoo (Loreal Everstrong Reconstruct Shampoo, more specifically) every other day. On the days I don’t shampoo, I wash my hair with conditioner (scalp to ends). Would you say that is still bad for my hair since I am technically washing my hair everyday?

Reply

51 Jane March 25, 2011 at 2:44 pm

I have tried to wash my hair less, but I am finding it hard. I keep trying, I bought all of the products you recommended. Anyway, you have good tips. Thanks.

Hey there! Long time reader/lurker. Love your tips!

I’ve always had thick, unruly, wavy, frizzy mess of hair that flat iron companies prey upon. Once I stopped washing it all the time, the texture of my hair actually changed! Granted, it’s not stick straight, but it looks like normal hair and I can let it air dry! I hate washing my hair anyways so its a win-win.

p.s. I’ve never had the nerve to dye my hair – I’m a wimp.
