My 5 Favorite iPhone Apps

by Teri on March 24, 2011 · 55 comments

I’m hooked on my iPhone. I don’t know how I lived without a smartphone – it’s so convenient! On my last phone, I didn’t even have internet and had a pay-per-text plan. Now my iPhone never leaves my side. Obviously, one of my favorite things about the iPhone is the huge assortment of apps. And these are my top 5 favorite apps…for now anyway.

1. Boxcar (free) : it compiles all your push notifications – like your email, Twitter, Facebook, and FourSquare accounts – into one tool…and does it better than the individual apps do it themselves. I just barely learned about this one but already love it.boxcar

2. TeuxDeux ($2.99) : I’m a long-time fan of TeuxDeux (it began as a web tool) and was thrilled when they got an iPhone app. I’m a to-do list junkie and the best thing about this one is its simplicity. teuxdeux

Your to-dos carry over to the next day if you don’t complete them and you get a satisfying, cross through your tasks once you mark one complete by tapping it. I also like the “Someday” list for things you need to do , but don’t have an immediate deadline.photo9(Yes, Ashley, I have your cookie dough nut butter on my to-do list for Saturday.)

3. What Should I Wear Running? (free) : When it’s not warm outside, I have a hard time deciding what to wear running. This tool solves that problem for me and tells me exactly what to wear, right down to gloves.photo(3)

You enter in whether you like to be cool, warm or in-between when you run and plug in your zip code. It saves your info and when you open the app, it pulls the current weather conditions and tells you what to wear. I’m always happy with its recommendations. photo

4. ShakeItPhoto ($0.99) : You don’t have to even create an account for this one. You just open the app, take a picture, then shake it, shake it, shake it like a polaroid picture. (Literally shake your phone to “develop” it…not really required but totally fun.) shakeitYou get a border around your picture and an antiquey-finish to it. IMG_0816

5. My Fitness Pal (free) : I don’t always track calories, but sometimes I do to check in with my nutrient levels (particularly iron, cholesterol and protein) or to help me see how much I’m really eating when suddenly my jeans “shrunk” and I can’t figure out why since I never wash my jeans. fitnesspal

Angela from Everyday Inspirations introduced me to this app when she blogged about it and I love it. It has the best food database I’ve found; they even have LoveGrown Granola in their database! It’s really simple to use, and if you like, you can connect to friends within it to cheer each other on with your goals.fitnesspal2

If I tell you mine, you gotta tell me yours: what’s your favorite iPhone app?

I use myfitnesspal too, and I LOVE it! They don’t have the app for BB yet, they are working on it, so for now I log my food on the computer, but can’t wait for the app to come out! I have no idea how you lived without a smartphone, I am on my third one and I am obsessed (just ask Scott), I ALWAYS have it with me.

Don’t have an iPhone, but if I did, I would love TeuxDeux and What Should I Wear Running? Too bad my replacement phone will not be an iPhone, either.
And I’m with you – life without smartphones?!? Though I struggle with how to keep my kids unplugged when I am so often not.

Thanks for the recommendations! Love iphone app swapping.

Here are mine:
(1) GeeTasks: It syncs with your Google tasks. I use it for all my lists. You can create as many lists as you want. And it gets cross out when you tap the item.

(2) Cardstar: You input all your numerous shopping cards (grocery store cards, video store, library, drugstore, Sephora, etc….) The cashier just scans your phone! It doesn’t always work though! :(

(3) For photos: I love Hipstamatic, Instagram, and PictureShow.

(4) LED Light: Great flashlight

(5) Bug Spray: I swear this works! I’ve tried it during the summer. It repels bugs. Maybe it was in my head? ;)

(6) Tanagrams : Fun puzzle game. I got this one from Real Housewives of NJ….haha….

(7) Shazam: Love this one. If there’s a song playing that you don’t know, you just hold your phone up and it detects what’s playing and tells you what it is.

:)

Mint is one of the best apps I’ve downloaded! You link it with your bank account, set budgets for the month ($150 on gas, $200 for groceries, etc), and it sets you alerts on your phone when you are over your limit. This really helped with my new years’ resolution of being more responsible with my money.

Great call with Boxcar! I’m also a huge fan of Reeder for news aggregation (I read this post on it!), Wunderlist for to-do’s (it’s free and also has Windows and Mac clients) and Instagram (takes pics with all sorts of filters) and CameraSync (to automatically back them up to Dropbox!).

Teri, I love this post! I had never heard of any of these and just downloaded two. (And then proceeded to take pictures of my keyboard, instead of working… um opps!)

My favorite apps are the default Notes app, Pandora, the Weather Channel, Meebo which is a chat app and allows me to chat with people through aim, gchat, facebook, etc., and a few games. I really love Tetris and of course Angry Birds. The birds are just so cute!

Thanks for sharing and I’d love to hear an update if your favorite apps change :-)

I have MyFitnessPal for my Android phone, and it’s great. I’ve been using it for about 2 weeks so far, and the food database is huge! It has almost everything I normally eat. Really helps me to keep accountable!

Google Sky Maps is also a lot of fun if you want to find constellations.

I also Love MyFitnessPal, been using it for over a year , I like to track nutrients, etc. Some other suggestions:
1) Flixster – tells you the movies playing at your local theater, upcoming movies, reviews, and DVD release dates. super handy! even when your traveling it pulls up the local movies based on location.
2) Shazam – great for music junkies, love hearing a great song and being able to let me phone listen and tell me the artist – then you can download the song straight into Itunes, or send a friend a postcard letting them know they might like the song!
3) IMDb- keeps up with celeberity ranking by popularity, and is the database for all things movie related.
4) HeyTell – you can leave a “voicemail” without actually calling – works like a text message, but you are verbally leaving the message.

Reply

39 Teri March 26, 2011 at 7:53 am

I have an app similar to Shazam – it’s SoundHound. love it!

HeyTell sounds awesome! I’ve got to get that.

Great post! I am so in love with my iPhone it’s crazy. I will have to download a couple of these. My favorites at the moment are Instagram, which you know about, and then the list app I use is called “List”–oh and the Whole Foods app–tons of recipes and you can plug in what you have on hand and it spits out a recipe you can make. Also, I am slightly hooked on iAssociate. It’s a word nerd game.

And Endomondo- a free workout tracker/GPS for any sport! Turn it on before a bike ride, stick it in your pocket and go! It saves your workouts and times so you can compare and upload to your computer. So cool!)
