The Weekender + Worst GU Flavor Ever

02/10/2013

Yesterday I ran 14 miles on the Muddy Creek Greenway. It’s a great place to do long runs because it’s super flat. There was still some mud left on the trail and a few puddles so my Vibrams got a little dirty. Good thing I can just toss them in the washing machine.

IMG 7715 I ate a GU at mile 8 and almost gagged. I hated this flavor. Seriously like the worst GU ever. I like the chocolate, vanilla and chocolate mint the best. I gotta stick to my favorites.

I had planned for 15 miles. My IT band had other (stupid) plans. Until the end, I was feeling great, running the whole time between 7:50 – 8:15 min/miles and then about mile 13, my IT started killing me. I tried to keep running, hoping it would loosen up but all of a sudden my leg just gave out on me, like the tendon in my leg had snapped. I hadn’t felt that kind of pain in years (not since I switched to running in Vibram FiveFingers) so I hobbled back to the car and ended up with 14 miles.

I’m pretty bummed but I’m guessing it happened because I’ve upped my mileage pretty substantially in the past few weeks and have been running 3-4 days a week. And my body has told me before that I can’t do that if I want to avoid running injuries. Lesson learned (again). So I went to yoga today and am planning on 2-3 shorter runs this week so see how it feels.

After the run, I came home and a relaxed a bit, then Meg came over and helped me tackle my inbox problem. I have 4 different email accounts and am terrible at keeping on top of emails – I had emails from last September that I never replied to but still had starred to remind me to follow up (ugh, embarrassing). She helped me figure out a system and also gave some tips to save time. And look what I saw (in one of them) today! WAHOO!!!!!!

I’m loving all your mexican dishes for the week. Yummmm. I’ve never had a GU…I might puke from any flavor. HAPPY WEEKEND!

Just wondering why you have so many e-mail accounts? Holy moses. Actually, come to think of it I have 3: (work, personal, website). Had no idea that you could chuck the vibram’s in the washing machine. Sweet.

I have no tips for email management (and currently have 1036 messages in my inbox).

I’ve been meaning to pop by and do a search for your posts on IT band pain, and here I found that you posted about it again. I have recently upped mileage and frequency and have some soreness in my knees and hips. I had to switch a Saturday run to Friday this past week, which meant 5 days of workouts in a row (alternating days were running) and no rest day before my long run. Lesson learned.

PB GU just sounds yucky. I’d rather have the PB! I’m (think I’m) reaching the mileage where I need to have more than plain water when I run, and figuring out gels and sports drinks makes my head spin. I really like the homemade sports drink from Emily @ Daily Garnish (I think I found her blog through yours!). I need to find a better way to prepare for/avoid the post-race slump. I got really dizzy and nauseous one day when I didn’t eat quickly enough. It was miserable. Time to search your blog and Emily’s to see what I can find!

Valentine’s Day – hmmm. We haven’t made a big deal out of it in recent years (mainly because I have been focused on being sure the kids had Valentine’s for classmates), but we really ought to do something special. We are bad about waiting until the last minute, though, so never have a sitter lined up.

Sadly, I have no tips for inbox management either. After attending several schools (each with a dedicated e-mail account) and getting married (which required a new account with the new name), I have multiple inboxes that are embarrassingly out of control.

sad to hear you didn’t like the PB gu. It’s one of my faves, along with Espresso Love! I will say that Clif Shots have become my new favorite, though–not as sticky, and the flavors taste like the real thing!

I had to laugh. I have 2 email accounts and 503 unopened e-mails. Blahhhh! (I blame moving overseas…..)

My last marathon, I also had IT band issues. They are the WORST. I did a lot of foam rolling and single-leg squats because my PT said that would help with stability and strength: http://sportsmedicine.about.com/cs/conditioning/a/aa110103a.htm

I love Valentine’s Day too, whether I have a “real” Valentine or not. What’s wrong with a holiday that encourages people to love each other and give each other flowers and chocolate? I always try to send out a bunch of cards and goodies to my family and friends so they feel the love!

You are the loveliest! Thanks for the shoutout.

Also, I want that beet salad you posted! I, too, have always been a beet lover (blame Mama E – she taught us young they are nature’s candy) and love the mix of ingredients in there. Hope you are having a lovely day!

xoxo
Holly
