Food Blogger Q&A

06/29/2013

Yay! We made it to the weekend! This past week at work was really busy so I’m ready for some down time. I saw this Q&A on Janetha’s blog the other day and thought it was fun so I highjacked it!

1. What did you eat for breakfast?

Smoothie with 1 c. water, 1 c. unsweetened almond milk, 1 c. pineapple, 1 c. frozen mango, 2 c. spinach.

2. How much water do you drink a day?

At least 64 oz. I know that because I always refill my Nalgene at work at twice. Then there’s tea and afterwork water drinking (but probably not as much as there should be). And I need to be better about drinking water on the weekends!

3. What is your current favorite workout?

Fast, short runs on the treadmill and Pure Barre

5. What are your favorite healthy snacks?

salted cashews, raw walnuts, chia seed pudding (1/4 c chia seed + 1/2 c almond milk + stevia + cinnamon + vanilla)

fruit, especially peaches lately

sliced turkey

carrots & cilantro-jalepeno hummus

6. What do you usually eat for lunch?

Leftovers from the night before or a big salad. Although today, I’m having a grilled cheese sandwich with local raw aged goat cheese. mmmmm.

7. What is your favorite body part to strength train?

shoulders because I see results there most quickly. But I really enjoy the ab sections in Pure Barre and I wish I was better at training my legs because they’re my biggest struggle to tone!

8. What is your least favorite body part to strength train?

Um… I don’t dislike any strength training! I love a good weight session in the gym. It’s been too long though – I’ve just been using Pure Barre as my strength training.

9. What are your “bad” food cravings?

Toast. Not really bad but I don’t have a lot of control with it. :) I found this new GF, dairy-free toast in the freezer section at WF and it makes the best toast!

Cookies (I love the GF snickerdoodles from TJs)

Gelato (well it’s really sorbetto but it tastes as creamy as gelato!)

10. Do you take vitamins or supplements?

yep! i take Balance of Nature fruit & veggies supplements, Balance of Nature Fiber & Spice, calcium when I remember, occasionally betaine HCL to help with digesting meat.

11. How often do you eat out?

Probably 1-2 times a week.

12. Do you eat fast food?

Um occasionally Chipotle, if that counts.

13. Who is your biggest supporter?

My family, my boyfriend, my Crystal, my Courtney. I’m a lucky girl. :)

14. Do you have a gym membership?

Yep, I’ a member of the Y and also buy packages to Pure Barre.

15. How many hours of sleep do you get a night?

Probably 6. 7 if I’m lucky.

16. Do you have a “cheat” day?

I don’t really think about it. Somedays I eat better than others. I find if I try to be too restrictive it backfires. I don’t generally keep treats in the house though because I will eat all.the.treats in 24 hours.

17. Do you drink alcohol?

Oh yes. Pass the wine.

18. Do you have a workout buddy?

I run and do yoga with my boyfriend. And generally, at least one of my friends is at Pure Barre when I go.

19. What is the best thing that has changed about your life since committing to a healthy lifestyle?

Honestly, cutting out gluten and dairy changed my life. I used to feel sick after every single meal – it was miserable. Now I know how to eat and don’t feel bloated or tired after meals and don’t get the severe stomach pain I used to that was diagnosed as (the vague diagnosis ever) IBS.

20. What was the last healthy thing you did?

I just ran 8 miles (8:10 pace) and bought lots of local veggies and meat from the farmers’ market. Oh I put on sunscreen. :)

Hi! I was intrigued by your answer to question 19 about going dairy and gluten-free. For the past few years, I’ve been suffering from intense abdominal bloating, distension, pain, you name it. i’ll spare you the details, but i’m pretty sure it’s gotten worse over time since i can’t even remember what a normal stomach/intestine feel like anymore… but anyway, i was wondering if you got any tests done or you just decided to start cutting out dairy and gluten? and when you cut them out, how did you do that? like instantaneously? i’ve considered cutting out dairy (must admit have not tried too hard though because really can’t bear the thought of living without cheese…..), but am a little hesitant to cut out gluten without getting some sort of test done because otherwise it seems a little superfluous. just not sure what to do, pretty sure i have some form of IBS, but doctors in the past haven’t done much about it other than telling me to try digestive enzyme supplements (which didn’t help much). any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks! :-)

Amber, thank you for jumping in here! I just realized I never responded to Eva! I agree with Amber, Eva, Paleo is a great option.

I discovered my gluten and dairy intolerances just by testing and keeping a food journal. Digestive enzymes do help me a little when I have meat (betaine HCL and pepsin, bromeline (sp??), but the enzymes don’t seem to help with the wheat or dairy. Pay attention to mucus forming in your nose and throat, and headaches – those were usually my instant reactions and digestive issues after a day or so.

Hi! Thanks for your responses. I’ve heard quite a bit about Paleo (and actually did a short presentation on it for one of my classes), but haven’t seriously considered it for myself before because it just seems really really tough (i’m not sure how to live without grains and cheese)… But i’ll read more into it and maybe see if i can start making some small adjustments. :)
